Hockey or the Great Outdoors, the choice is yours!

The town of High Level has a subarctic climate, meaning that we experience extreme seasonal variation in temperatures.  In fact the hottest temperature ever recorded in our town was 35.2 Celsius whereas the coldest was -50.6 Celsius!  At the end of summer, we sometimes experience sporadic changes in temperature: winter can onset very quickly, only to be followed by a sudden warm spell.  This August in High Level depending on the weather, prolong your stay in the great outdoors or get inside for the most traditional of Canadian winter activities: Ice Hockey!

The Flamingo Northern Classic Exhibition Game

Stomping Tom Connors said it best: Hockey is Canada’s “Good old Game.”  If it’s starting to feel a bit nippy outdoors by late August, check out a great exhibition game between the Grande Prairie Storm and the Drayton Valley Thunder taking place on Friday August 29th, 2014 from 7:30pm onwards right through to the morning of August 30th at the High Level Arena.  Warm up with a hot chocolate and spectate Canada’s favourite game with the locals at this family friendly fun event.  Tickets are only ten dollars and children under four years of age enter for free.  For more information including where to get tickets, click here.

Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park

Don’t give up on summer just yet!  If the weather is still warm near the end of August consider a trip 225km. north to the Twin Falls Gorge Park in the Northwest Territories.   This park features excellent facilities including well-marked hiking trails, waterfall viewpoints, spectacular hiking options and beautiful picnic facilities.  A must see is the Hay River and its canyon, which cuts deep into the bedrock of the prehistoric Canadian Shield.  This is majestic country you won’t want to miss well within striking distance of High Level.
